They’re at it again, those Live Oak High athletes, producing another banner sports season. This winter, the Acorns continued their dominance in soccer with matching Tri-County Athletic League titles by both the boys and girls teams. Both teams also advanced well into the Central Coast Section playoffs, with the LO boys making the CCS semifinals and the LO girls taking No. 2 seed Santa Teresa to penalty kicks before bowing out in the quarterfinals.
While seniors such as Nick Mott, Anthony Razouk, Hassan and Hussein Abdullahi, Michelle McDonald, Lena Marsh and Katie Renteria were all key performers, the Acorns also received fine contributions from a host of underclassmen and figure to be strong contenders next season, too.
And, that’s just the beginning. Despite a down year, Coach Brett Paolucci got his LO boys basketball team into the CCS playoffs again behind the play of seniors Matt van Keulen, Doug Porras and Brandon Powell, among others. And, first-year coach Jeff Perkins led the young Lady Acorns girls basketball team out of the league cellar after picking up its first two league victories in three seasons. Watch out for juniors Mattie Borges and Analise Curley and sophomores Megan Gulla and Afshawn Chakamian next year.
Finally, the Acorn wrestling team sent another large contingent to the CCS Finals this weekend, including TCAL champions Hondo Dominguez and Jon Redmond.
All in all, the Live Oak High tradition of athletic excellence was well-represented this winter.
