After 35 years, Joes Heeregrave was able to ditch his glasses—for free.
The Morgan Hill resident was a recent beneficiary of San Jose-based Furlong Vision Correction’s annual Gift of Sight program, which provides consultation, Lasik surgery and post-operation visits at no cost to the recipients.
The medical center has worked with local non-profit organizations to identify Gift of Sight recipients, including the American Cancer Society, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Hope Services, Team Red, White and Blue, The Cost of Courage Foundation and the Diabetes Society. This year, Furlong Vision Correction partnered with work2future and also opened its program to individuals who were nominated by community members in addition to continuing its partnership with local ophthalmologists.
Heeregrave, a father of three, has been living in different countries as a missionary since 2009. He recently moved to California to become a missionary/youth pastor at Cathedral Of Faith in San Jose.
He has been dealing with migraines for more than 20 years due to glasses and contact lenses switches.
“After 35 years of having to wear glasses, I am so happy and grateful that I was selected for a free Lasik surgery by Furlong Vision Correction as part of their Gift of Sight program,” Heeregrave posted on his Instagram account. “Since last Friday, I have clear vision! Thank you so much.”
Dr. Michael Furlong established Furlong Vision Correction in 1998 and launched the annual Gift of Sight program in 2002. Since the program’s inception, Furlong has provided services to 155 recipients, donating more than $985,000 in procedures.
In addition to Heeregrave, five other people were selected to receive the surgery this year.
