The Live Oak field hockey team went 3-1-1 in the Willow Creek Jamboree over the weekend.
All the games were decided by a goal or less. The tournament was played in 30-minute increments.
“It was really hard for the girls to get pumped with two 15-minute halves,” said first-year Live Oak head coach Christy Musselmann. “By the time they got warmed up, the game was over. They are excited to play some full games.”
Live Oak will have its chance this week on the road against a couple tough rivals, Westmont on Tuesday and St. Francis on Wednesday.
In the first game of the tournament, Live Oak faced the Willow Glen JV team because the Berkeley team didn’t show up. The Acorns won 1-0 on a goal by Paris Rowan.
Live Oak also won the next two games by the score of 1-0, defeating Cornings and Leigh, who moved up to the ‘A’ League. Allison Mutz scored the goal in the second game.
“Leigh was best competition we saw this week,” Musselmann said. “The refs were great, calling the fouls like they were supposed to be called. There were several new rule changes this year, and they weren’t being called in most of the game.s.”
Live Oak tied Yuba City 0-0 and lost to Prospect 1-0 on a shot in the final seconds of the game.
“It shouldn’t have counted,” Musselmann said. “It was off the ground and high into the upper corner of the net on a short corner.”
Musselmann was pleased with the effort the team put forth in the early-season warmup.
“They looked good,” Musselmann said. “Righ now we are just trying to get focused and get serious. We’re just trying to work on the mental game right now.”
The Live Oak field hockey team is also trying to recoop after many of the jersies were stolen from the shed over the summer. Musselmann estimated about $2,500 in uniforms and equipment was taken.
“It really doesn’t make any sense,” Musselmann said. “We just purchased new JV uniforms last year and varsity uniforms the year before.
There are only eight JV players who have the full uniform now, and there are 15 who have to borrow from the varsity player after the game.
Musselmann suggested that someone possibly wanted to use them for soccer uniforms. The loss means that the Live Oak Booster Club will probably be asked to help cover the cost of replacing the stolen uniforms.
The Acorns were coming off of a 5-0 loss against Los Gatos, who finished second in the Central Coast Section last year and first the year before.
