Although turnout for this year’s South Valley Wine Auction was lower than hoped for because of spring break, organizers still estimate the event grossed $23-26,000.

The auction, which was previously held at Guglielmo’s Winery, was moved to the newly opened community center this year. Tickets were $35 each, and the 200-person limit at the Morgan Hill Community Center was almost met, organizers said.

“We are not sure of the exact amount that we raised because of additional expenses with the center this year,” said organizer Jon Hatakeyama. “Everyone is pretty enthusiast for next year. We had a great group of committee members – all very dedicated, who carried a big load with each of their duties.”

Planning for the event started last October. Ten wineries and nine restaurants donated their time and products for the event. Many merchants in the area donated items for the auction.

Some of the auction items included signed footballs from Jeff Ulbrich and Jeff Garcia and several vintage wines including chardonnays donated by various wineries. The golf packages and fine dining also drew a lot of attention. Auctioneer Jim Crossen kept the bidding lively.

Money raised from the South Valley Wine Auction has helped to buy new uniforms for the runners. Money is set aside to funnel into middle schools to provide for feeder programs for the track and cross country teams.

“We have a small base of athletes we are able to help,” said planner Donn Mott, who’s son competes for Live Oak. “But it is one of programs most in need of funds to keep it going.”
