To help you get back into your homework routine, the Morgan Hill Library offers a variety of online databases that can help you with many of your school projects. To access our databases, go to the Santa Clara County Library home page at www.santaclaracountylib.org and click on the “Databases and Research Tools” button. You’ll need a library card and a PIN number to use this service.
Once you get to the database page, scroll down to the “Student Resources” section for the databases that are good for elementary and middle school projects. Here are just a few of the databases you’ll find here:
American the Beautiful: If you’re working on a state report, this is the database for you! Here you’ll find basic facts about your state as well as information on its history, geography, economy, culture, a timeline, and much more.
Biography Resource Center: If you’re looking for information about people, this is a very useful database. You can search by a specific person’s name and also by occupation, nationality, birth/death year, etc. You’ll usually find several 3- or 4-page articles about your person here.
EBSCO Animals: With information from the Encyclopedia of Animals, this database will give you a description of almost any kind of animal, and usually one or more pictures as well.
New Book of Popular Science: This database contains information on astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, plants, and much, much more. It also has lots of ideas for science experiments in the “Projects” section.
World Book Online: This is just like the World Book Encyclopedia you know and love, but you can access it on your computer! It can be very handy for those state and country reports, with all the information you’d expect from the encyclopedia as well as links to web sites and other articles. You can also easily access current events, an online atlas, what happened today in history, and information on just about any subject
These are just a few of the many databases available at the Morgan Hill Library. If you need help with your database search, call us at 779-3196 and ask to speak to a children’s librarian. Or, drop by the reference desk any time and a librarian can give you a short tutorial.
