Live Oak will not be able to play the scheduled home game against Alisal on Friday night because the new football field was deemed to be unsafe.
The Morgan Hill Pop Warner teams were already banned from the field, now the football team was as well.
Football coach Glen Webb received a call about 10 a.m. on Monday morning from principal Principal Nancy Serigstad letting him know that the field was unsafe for the game but would be ready for the follow week for the homecoming game with Hollister.
“If it has been deemed to be unsafe, as a coach I am concerned with how we we can play on it the next week,” Webb said. “If it is unsafe this week, how will it be ready next week?”
As of Monday afternoon, the Acorns still do not have a place yet to play the game. Because the Alisal field is under renovation, the team has had to play games at the Salinas High School stadium known as the Pit.
But that stadium is also being used and is not an option. Both Gilroy and Hollister have home games and are out. Serigstad is looking at possibly playing the game in San Jose.
In an internal memo sent to the teachers, Superintendent Carolyn McKennan accused coaches of over using the field before it was ready. Live Oak has played just one freshman, JV and varsity game on the field so far.
“By this time last year we would already have had three games on it,” Webb said.
