night, dropping their league record to 2-4.
The Live Oak Girls Volleyball team fell to Gilroy Wednesday night, losing in straight sets 23-25, 24-26, 12-25.
“We made all the errors in the world, “ said Acorns Head Coach Laura Coleman, who was less than pleased after the defeat . “Our service and receiving looked real bad. We probably had more errors than kills.”
Despite their sloppy play, Live Oak (13-8, 2-4 TCAL) managed to keep the score close in the first two sets. But all the bounces seemed to go the Mustang’s way at the most important times.
“We can play as good as they can,” Coleman said. “We just came out flat.
Trailing 24-22 in the second set, the Acorns rallied to tie the score at 24 after a diving save by senior Justine Pingue that ignited roars from the crowd.
But just when the momentum seemed to be swinging in the Acorn’s favor, Gilroy came right back with a spike to retake the lead and was then able to hold off Live Oak with a 24-26 set victory.
Instead of the game being tied at one set a piece going into the third set the Mustangs took full control and never looked back.
“Usually – when we’re the home team – we play tough,” Coleman said. That wasn’t the case Wednesday.
In the third set, Gilroy jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
“We just let it get to us that we were down by so much,” junior Heather Molyneaux said. “We made lots of hitting errors. We just need to step it up (next time).”
Coleman said her squad is much better than they played, but just didn’t show it Wednesday night.
“We’ve beat much better teams than them before,” Coleman said. “Not to take anything away from Gilroy.”
Live Oak’s next match is scheduled for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against San Benito High School.
