For the second time in a week, the Live Oak High girls soccer team emerged victorious over a defending Central Coast Section champion.

After downing Division II co-champ Presentation 1-0 on Tuesday last week, the Acorns swept past Division III titleist Santa Cruz 3-0 on Thursday.

Cross-country and track standout Cobbie Jones scored a pair of goals for Live Oak (3-1-2 overall) in just her second game of the season.

Jones joined the team late after completing her cross-country season.

Live Oak’s Jennie Emick added a goal for the Acorns, who also got assists from Shawna McKeown and Lena Marsh.

The Acorns’ next scheduled match is at the Walnut Creek Tournament on Jan. 2.

LO boys soccer

Despite a 1-0 loss to Los Gatos at the Homestead Cup on Saturday, the Live Oak High boys soccer team advanced in Cup play, setting up a rematch with Leland.

The Acorns (4-3 overall) ended up in a three-way tie in their pool but advanced by virtue of goal differential.

Live Oak will play Leland on Saturday at Homestead. The Acorns lost to Leland 3-1 in last year’s Cup.

Against Los Gatos, Live Oak dominated play for the entire game but was victimized by bad luck, according to Acorn coach Tony Goble.

While the Live Oak offense peppered the Wildcat goal with shots, Los Gatos failed to mount any attack at all, Goble said.

Los Gatos scored the lone goal of the game on a free kick from 20 yards out that the Acorn defenders misjudged.

Live Oak is also scheduled to host Seaside on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. this week.

LO girls basketball

After a blowout loss to Tri-County Athletic League rival Salinas in the first round of Watsonville High’s Wildcatz Invitational last week, the Acorn girls basketball team came back with a vastly better effort against Santa Catalina in the second round on Friday.

However, Live Oak (1-7 overall) still ended up on the losing end of a hard-fought 44-40 decision.

“It went down to the wire, which I liked,” Acorn coach Richard Silva said. “It was great match-up. I liked the effort after getting blown out (against Salinas).”

Live Oak’s Melissa Llanes had a team-high 16 for the Acorns, while Elena Guevara scored seven and Ruth Dominguez added six.

Live Oak lost to Salinas 45-19 in its first round game on Thursday last week.

The Acorns begin play in the Alisal Winter Jam Tournament on Thursday.
