Despite a game effort that included an inspired fourth quarter comeback, the host Live Oak High girls basketball team ended up on the losing end of a 32-31 decision to San Lorenzo Valley on Tuesday.

Trailing 24-17 at the end of the third quarter, Live Oak rallied to score eight straight points and take the lead at 25-24 on senior guard Megan Smart’s three-point play with 4:52 left to play but couldn’t hold onto the lead and fell in the final seconds.

Live Oak (1-8 overall) kept the score close for much of the first half but trailed 18-14 at halftime when the Cougars hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the second quarter.

SLV extended its lead in the third quarter as the Acorns began to turn the ball over and their offense sputtered.

After rallying to take the lead in the final quarter, Live Oak traded buckets with SLV down the stretch and had several chances to tie the game or take the lead in the final two minutes that came to naught.

But the Acorn defense held steady and kept the Cougars from pulling away.

Finally, SLV forced a turnover and hit a layup for a 32-29 lead with 11.5 seconds to play.

Needing a 3-pointer to tie, Live Oak had to settle for Analise Curley’s two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to provide the final margin.

The Acorns were sched-uled to begin play at Alisal High’s Winter Jam Tournament on Thursday, and were scheduled to play Friday also. The tourney finals are set for Saturday.
