Pacific Grove – Morgan Hill’s Trevor Watson captured his first triathlon title over the weekend, winning the boys 13-14-year old Olympic Distance division at the Triathlon at Pacific Grove.

He finished the mile swim, 26-mile bike ride and six-mile run in 2:49.28 to capture first place.

Watson, who has been doing triathlons for about a year and has competed in aproximately 15, said the swim was challenging in this race.

“It was a lot different than a regular triathlon because we had to swim through the kelp,” Watson said. “That made it a lot more difficult and it slowed down the swim times. It was a little intimidating.”

Watson’s interest in triathlons started because he wanted to get involved in biking and it grew from there.

“I had never tried doing any kind of biking so I thought I would just try that and then I started doing triathlons and I liked it,” the 14-year-old Live Oak freshman said.

The past three races Watson has been doing the Olympic distance events and said stepping on the podium for the first time was a new feeling.

“I was a little nervous getting on the podium the first time,” Watson said.

Next up for Watson is Scott Tinley’s Adventures in San Luis Obispo on Sept. 30.

Several other local athletes also competing at Pacific Grove. In the Sprint Dstance division, Morgan Hill’s Lance Wolfsmith was first overall, finishing in 53:31. Michael Patterson, 43, came in fifth overall and was first in his class with a time of 57:30 and 13-year-old Gabriel Cinkova also came in first in her class with a time of 1:12.10.
