Morgan Hill – A fire gutted the interior of a small guest house behind a home on Del Monte Avenue near Wright Avenue about 3:45pm Wednesday afternoon.

The guest house had recently been remodeled. Santa Clara County Fire Department engines contained the fire before it could spread to the surrounding trees, shrubbery and other residences.

Witnesses described the fire as shooting straight up into the air into the overhanging trees.

“It was gushing everywhere,” said Donna Fletcher, who live across the street. “It was just like a geyser.”

SCCFD Arson Investigator Dennis Johnsen said Friday that the cause of the fire is listed as “accidental,” and that it was likely the result of an electrical appliance malfunction. “There were three appliances in the area where the fire started – a heater, a TV and a stereo,” he said. “It was likely the heater.”

The upper floor of the two-story home was completely gutted, he said, but the lower floor had only water damage.
