Dear Editor,

Halfway through our centennial year, it is appropriate to recognize the great amount of community support we have had to date.

We broke ground on our centennial project June 26. Thanks to a year-long planning effort by the Centennial Project Committee, the city will receive a birthday gift that will be enjoyed for generations to come. I would like to thank co-chair persons Roger Knopf and Steve Tate who have done an amazing job of bringing our community’s service organizations and local businesses together, keeping them on task and coming up with this project. Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, AAUW, the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce, the Morgan Hill Downtown Association, the Historical Society and other community minded individuals came together and did brainstorming, planning, and tweaking to come up with a history trail which highlights our city’s history and puts it into perspective with the rest of the world. Thanks to you all for your tireless efforts on behalf of the community.

While the project group met, others were meeting as well to take on other tasks to make our centennial celebration one to be remembered. Marilyn Librers and her New Year’s Eve committee set the tone for the whole year with a party to end all parties. Everyone had fun a hundred times over and the fun hasn’t stopped. Hearty congratulations to Cindy Wright, David Wright and Linda Wieck, who did themselves proud putting together a first-place Fourth of July float for the parade this year.

And there’s plenty more to come! Susan Brazleton and her Centennial Day committee are gearing up to give us a birthday party that promises to be a real family birthday celebration with games, food, music by the Joe Sharino Band and the largest birthday cake you have ever seen. The year’s events will be capped on the actual day of our incorporation with a reception at the Morgan Hill House on Nov. 10. The History Trail, our birthday gift to the city, will be unveiled. There will be food and drink and many other surprises.

None of this could be happening without the generous support of the community. Fry’s and the Maple Leaf RV Park, our $10,000 sponsors most certainly head the list of these supporters. They are followed by our $5,000 sponsors: Anritsu, Hospira, Roger and Janie Knopf, Bianchi, Lorincz & Company, Inc. and South Valley National Bank. And they in turn are followed by our $2,500 sponsors: South Valley Disposal & Recycling Inc., Design Factory Graphics, Thomas Kincade Company, Guglielmo Winery, Morgan Hill Times, Naturescape Environmental Design and Judy and Jerry Pyle. And the list goes on, please visit our Web site for the comprehensive list (www.mhcentennial.org ).

With two major events left to come, it is not too late to join the ranks of those already supporting our events. All you have to do is visit our Web site for information on sponsor or volunteer opportunities or call Jennifer Tate at (408) 779-6992.
