an encouraging effort Wednesday in its Mount Hamilton Division
opener against Westmont.
The Bulldogs lost 48-40 but showed they can compete on the road
in the top level of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Travis Saenz scored nine points in his first game back since
missing most of last week’s Bulldog Chase with a sprained ankle,
and Ben Vater scored a dozen points to lead Sobrato. Chris Turner
added seven points.

Travis Saenz had nine points in his first game back since missing most of last week’s Bulldog Chase with a sprained ankle, and Ben Vater scored a dozen points to lead Sobrato. Chris Turner added seven points.

The Bulldogs trailed 19-17 at halftime and were able to stay within single digits of the Warriors (5-5, 1-0).

Sobrato (2-9, 0-1) will try to end a five-game losing streak, its longest since 2006, against Willow Glen at 7 p.m. Friday at SHS.

GIRLS SOCCER

Live Oak’s second straight Mount Hamilton Division title defense got off to a rocky start Wednesday with a 3-1 loss to visiting Santa Teresa, the first team to beat the Acorns this season.

Nicole Alper, Noelle Lara and Tegan McGrady scored for the Saints (4-2, 1-0), who have won two straight against the Acorns (4-1, 0-1) dating to last year.

Live Oak and Santa Teresa were first and second in the league in 2011 and went deep in the Division III and Division II playoffs.

Live Oak hosts Sobrato at 3:15 p.m. Friday.

  • Speaking of whom, the Bulldogs played to a 2-2 tie with Branham in their Mount Hamilton Division opener Wednesday at the Outdoor Sports Complex.

Freshman Tamlin Vereyken scored both goals for Sobrato (2-2-3, 0-0-1) with assists by Kate van Keulen and Nijah Nunley.
