The top seed in his bracket, Locsin won his four matches at Clovis High School by fall or major decision (eight to 14 points), as the sophomore defeated No. 2 seed Micah Perez of Central Union 14-3 in the final, following pins over Slaytr Gonzalez (1:42) of Sultana and Nick Marquez (3:25) of Foothill-Bakersfield. Locsin also beat Buchanan’s Jason Delacruz 11-2.

Locsin, who took second at state at 103 pounds in 2011, is 18-0 this season.

  • Live Oak’s Jonathan Robles placed second at 106 pounds to lead all locals in the Apple Cider Classic held Friday and Saturday in Watsonville.

The freshman won his first match 12-1 over Abel Reyes of North Monterey County and pinned Anthony Andrighetto (4:00) of Menlo-Atherton and Jae Wan Yun (1:57) of Pacific Grove to reach the final, which he lost 10-4 to Palma’s Hunter Rehbien.

Also in the tournament, Live Oak’s Tyler Pederson won the 138-pound consolation title, bouncing back from a second-round loss to top seed Trent Marshall of Palo Alto.

Pederson clinched the title by beating San Lorenzo Valley’s Elliot Doran. Pederson had two other wins by fall.

Sobrato junior Zach Zhang upset top seed Reed Worthy of Palma on the way to placing third at 145 pounds.

Zhang edged Chancele Tavarez of Santa Teresa 6-5 in his second match, then outlasted Worthy 13-11 in overtime before losing by pin to eventual champion Daniel Proa of Salinas.

Zhang pinned North Salinas’ Edy Antonio (1:42) in the third-place match.

Sobrato senior Brian Gomes took sixth at 120 pounds, forfeitting the fifth-/sixth-place bout because he reached his limit of five matches.

Live Oak placed 14th (84.5 points) out of 37 schools, while Sobrato (59.5) finished 21st.

Palma won the team title with 224.5 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Sobrato dropped its Mount Hamilton Division home opener Friday by 59-29 score to Willow Glen.

Ben Vater scored 11 points to lead the host Bulldogs (2-11, 0-2), and Travis Saenz and Chris Turner added eight and five points, respectively.

The Rams (6-6, 1-1) received 14 points from Todd Meeker and nine from Taylor Meeker and John Riley.
