Helen Hawkins Lord passed away peacefully one month after her 95th birthday.
She was born in San Francisco, the daughter of Pearl Hawkins and Herbert Schulze. She spent her early years in Dixon and then moved to Hollister, where her father opened Schulze’s department store. She was the great-granddaughter of T. S. Hawkins, who was a founder of the town of Hollister and owned the Ausaymas Ranch.
She loved the ranch and it was there that she was raised and lived most of her life. She moved to Pebble Beach in 1976.
Helen graduated from Castilleja School in Palo Alto. She was predeceased in 1974 by her husband, Admiral Edwin E. Lord, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Her daughter, Nancy Lord Guthrie, died in 1985. She is survived by her brother, Herbert C. Schulze of Reno, NV and her son, Charles E. Lord of Pebble Beach (Liz). She is also survived by four grandchildren: Kathryn Mahosky of Keizer, OR; Christopher Lord of San Francisco; James A. Guthrie of Barrington, NH; Nancy Day Guthrie of Seattle, WA and five great-grandchildren.
She was a past president of the Peninsula Volunteers in Palo Alto and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed gardening, bridge and entertaining where she was the life of many parties. She was well known for her quick wit and remarkable memory.
The family wishes to express appreciation to Sara Krueger and The Del Monte Assisted Living for their special care and kindness during the last years of her life.
Helen was cremated and her ashes will be placed next to those of her beloved daughter. A private family service will be held at a later date.
