George W. Jean, Jr. passed away in Sunnyvale where he had moved to be closer to his only daughter, Margot Jacobsen and her husband, Syd. He had been ill for an extended period of time. He was a lifelong resident of Hollister and until recently had only left his hometown for college and when he was in the Navy during WWII. He loved Hollister and missed being there.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Eleanor, who was a teacher in the Hollister School District for 30 years. He was a 50 year member of San Benito Lodge F&AM (Masons), St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, VFW Post 9242 and Hazel Hawkins Hospital Auxiliary, drove patients for the American Cancer Society and attended San Benito Junior College from 1936-38 and then Armstrong College in Berkeley from 1938-40. After a 28 year career with PG&E, he spent several years as an alcohol counselor with the County Mental Health Dept. His commitment to helping others was a strong part of his life.
Besides his daughter, he is survived by two granddaughters, Tricia (Mark) Loveland of Washington, DC and Kelly (Jeff) Greer of Santa Cruz and 4 great grandchildren, Jake, Kate and Alex Loveland and Dylan Greer. He is also survived by two nieces, Linda Manken and Ann Riley and five great nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, Nov. 17, 2006 at 11:00 am at the IOOF Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Joan Gardner, San Benito Masonic Lodge #211 and military rites will be offered by VFW Post 9242.
Donations are preferred to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Hollister or St. Jude’s Episcopal Church in Cupertino.
