Morgan Hill’s Discovery Counseling Center was the recipient of a $7,000 grant from the Intero Foundation, and the local nonprofit plans to use the funds to expand the Bridge Project, an after-school homework and reading club for disadvantaged children in the South Valley.
The funds were awarded to Discovery Counseling Center in November 2012, according to a press release from Executive Director Larry McElvain.
The Bridge Project includes parenting classes that teach practical skills such as health communication, effective boundaries and monitoring, consistent discipline and being a positive role model, the press release said. The program also offers an after-school tutoring and life skills program that takes place at the Discovery Counseling Center site four days every week, and a program to educate family members in the developmental assets and empower them to work together to implement assets for personal growth.
“By giving South Valley parents the skills they need to connect them with their child’s school and teacher, the Discovery Counseling Center will create an atmosphere for positive growth for the whole family,” McElvain said in the press release.
