Morgan Hill – For the second week, the final score did not reflect the excitement and effort of the Sobrato Bulldogs, as the Pacific Grove Breakers handed them their second loss.
The Bulldog defense hounded the Breakers time and time again, with sacks, stops and goal line dogged determination, but Pacific Grove’s offense still managed to get into the end zone four times.
The first quarter was scoreless, with several three-and-out series by each team.
Pacific Grove picked off a pass, but instead of capitalizing on it, Sobrato put a period to it with a couple of sacks by Michael Welch and Victor Gillespie.
Starting the second quarter with a splash, the Breakers scored their first touchdown.
The Bulldogs didn’t lie down, however, and enabled by excellent blocking on the offensive line, several players moved the ball down the field, including JoJo Anaya, Steven Gutierrez and Tony Zizzo.
Neither team was able to find the end zone before the end of the first half, however, and a missed field goal by the Breakers gave the Bulldogs one chance before the half, which they punted away.
Coming onto the field for the second half, Sobrato seemed rejuvenated as they kicked off to Pacific Grove.
After some excellent tackles and a pass that was tipped by senior outside linebacker Shane Kendall, the Breakers were forced to punt.
The third quarter was packed with power plays on both sides of the ball, including several sacks, runs for long yards and an interception by sophomore defensive back Adam Guerra.
But Pacific Grove scored its second touchdown in the third quarter after moving the ball down the field with a long pass, bringing the score to 14-0.
The end of the quarter set up Sobrato’s only touchdown, with a 15-yard facemask penalty on Pacific Grove and pass receptions by Jo Jo Anaya and Alex Meldrum.
Anaya celebrated the beginning of the fourth quarter by catching a touchdown pass on fourth down , bringing the score to 14-7, and hope to the team and cheering fans.
Despite the Bulldogs’ effort, Pacific Grove moved the ball down the field and ran into the end zone, pushing the score to 7-21 with seven minutes left in the game.
The offense strained to make something happen, and sacks, fumbles and incomplete passes brought the defense back onto the field.
Another touchdown for Pacific Grove came after a run up the middle on second and two. Sophomore Mark Borland boosted the crowd’s spirits with his kickoff return, and Zizzo drew cheers for a run up the middle, but the Bulldogs, for a second week, had trouble finding the end zone.
