Sobrato Teens Raise $1,000 for Live Music in Nursing Homes

A group of SOBRATO HIGH SCHOOL teens has raised $1,000 to bring music to the ears and smiles to the faces of seniors confined to area convalescent facilities.

And they did it with bowling balls.

The INTERACT CLUB OF SOBRATO HIGH SCHOOL, a service organization for teens sponsored by the ROTARY CLUB OF MORGAN HILL, raised the funds by tossing balls for a Bowl-A-Thon at Morgan Hill Bowl February.

On March 8 Interact Club president Samantha Bondi presented their proceeds to the Young at Heart Project, a nonprofit organization that encourages the magic and therapeutic benefits of live professional musical entertainment. Their musicians perform for seniors confined by age and infirmity in convalescent and residential care facilities throughout the Central Coast and South Bay communities.

“One day our group’s founder was giving an impromptu concert at a rest home and an elderly man – who had not spoken for two years – erupted into song, much to the amazement of the hospital staff,” said Peter Doyle, executive director of the Saratoga-based Young at Heart Project.

Since that experience in 1985, Young at Heart has provided thousands of musical performances primarily with area performers.

“The success of our experience with this Rotary youth group has encouraged us to consider this a model for a national program,” said Doyle. He said he and Board President Gary Newquist are launching discussions about expanding the natural tie between youth and elders through a partnership between Interact and Young at Heart across the country.

The Sobrato High School Interact Club is a part of Rotary International and sponsored locally by the Rotary Club of Morgan Hill under advisors Dan Newquist and David de la Cuesta.

The March 8 presentation ceremony at the high school included an appreciation performance by national fiddle champion James “Fingers” Shupe, whose music appeared in the films “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Earth Bound.”
