While the offense had its moments, it was the defense that secured the victory for the Central Coast Barnstormers, who shut out the Northern Valley Lions 20-0 Friday in Week 2 of the Northern California Amateur Football Federation season.
The Barnstormers’ (2-0) defense did not allow a drive to go past the 20-yard line and rattled a Lions offense that had its opportunities but was unable to convert time and again. The Barnstormers defense forced two turnovers and stopped the Lions on fourth down four times.
The game was scoreless until the middle of the second quarter when Tyrone Ward took a Lions punt to the house for an electrifying 65-yard touchdown return.
Courtesy of another defensive stop, the offense was able to capitalize on good field position and marched down the field for a score before halftime.
After a 30-yard pass play from Bryan Smith to David Gittens, (in which Gittens got 25 yards after the catch) Smith then hooked up with Donta Anderson in the end zone for a 27-yard strike that put the Barnstormers up 13-0 heading into halftime.
The 2006 NCAFF and NorCal champions’ Barnstormers next home game is 2pm April 29 when they host the Predators.
