The Live Oak boys soccer team has been holding its own against the top ranked teams in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Mount Hamilton Division.
On Tuesday, the Acorns battled to a 0-0 tie with Leland. It was the seventh time senior goalkeeper Sheldon Steenhuis has blanked a team this season.
It was the second meeting between the two schools. In early December, Live Oak tied Leland 1-1 in Morgan Hill.
Before the game on Tuesday, Acorns’ coach Tony Goble said that the game would be a good matchup and felt it would be close match.
“They’re a good team,” Goble said. “We tied with them the first time around. It went back and forth the whole game.”
With the tie, the Acorns are now 3-6-7 overall and 2-4-4 in the league. Goble said his team plays in one of the toughest divisions with some of the better teams from the Central Coast Section, but that his team has remained competitive.
Three of the Acorns’ last four game, including today’s game against Oak Grove, have been against the top three teams in their division.
On Jan. 16, Live Oak tied 1-1 with Overfelt, which is No. 2 in the Mount Hamilton Division. The Acorns held the undefeated Royals scoreless in the second half of the game.
While the scoreboard showed that Live Oak lost to Lincoln 4-1, the Acorns’ defensive strategy got the Falcons frustrated for most of the game. Live Oak held its opponent for most of the first half.
Even with a losing record, the young team has played well against the top teams in the league.
Earlier this month, Live Oak tied with Oak Grove, No. 3 in the division, 1-1. Game time is set for 3:15pm today at Live Oak’s varsity soccer field.
