Sgt. Jerry Neumayer, a Morgan Hill police veteran who has worked his way up the ranks at the local department, has been promoted to the position of captain of the field operations division.
Starting May 1, Neumayer will fill one of two captain’s positions at MHPD. The position was left vacant earlier this year when David Swing was promoted to chief.
Swing said the “drive and determination” that Neumayer has displayed throughout his law enforcement career made him the successful candidate for the position.
“I have worked with Jerry throughout my career in Morgan Hill. His character, work ethic and dedication to the community have always been a cornerstone of his leadership. Jerry is definitely the right person for the job,” Swing said.
Since being employed by MHPD, Neumayer’s assignments have included police officer, detective, corporal and sergeant. He recently supervised the special operations division and served as the reserve police officer coordinator and public information officer.
Neumayer’s professional accomplishments also include returning to school to complete his Bachelor’s degree and graduating from the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, Swing added.
Neumayer has also been active in the community, as a coach and manager of Morgan Hill Pony Baseball, as well as a board member and coach for the Pride of Morgan Hill girls’ softball league. He has also served as a board member for the Mt. Madonna YMCA and is a graduate of the Leadership Morgan Hill Class of 2005.
“One of Neumayer’s strengths is his community involvement,” Swing said.
While serving as a U.S. Army police officer nearly 20 years ago, Neumayer never imagined working as a police captain.
When asked for his thoughts on the new assignment Neumayer replied, “I am excited about the opportunity and I look forward to serving the department and community in this new role.”
As captain of the MHPD field operations division, Neumayer joins the department’s command staff with Capt. Joe Sampson, who oversees the special operations division. Neumayer’s previous assignment as a sergeant in the detective bureau will be occupied by Sgt. Shane Palsgrove.
Neumayer lives in Morgan Hill with his wife of 19 years, Elizabeth, and their children, Khailyn and Jakob.
