The Avoid the 13 Santa Clara County DUI Task Force will join nearly 10,000 other law enforcement agencies nationwide in support of an intensive crackdown on impaired driving beginning Friday, Aug. 19 and running through Sept. 5, known as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
DUI driver’s license checkpoints, multi-agency DUI task force deployments and local roving DUI patrols are scheduled locally in partnership with law enforcement nationwide during the Summer/Labor Day Campaign.
In 2009 alone, 10,839 people died in DUI crashes in California, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The age group with the highest percentage of alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes was the 21 to 24 group.
“All too often, innocent, law-abiding people suffer tragic consequences and the loss of loved ones due to the careless disregard for human life,” said Capt. Frank Damiano, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. “Because we’re committed to ending DUI fatalities, we’re intensifying enforcement during the crackdown. Since twice as many alcohol-impaired accidents occur over the weekend and four times as many occur at night, we will be especially vigilant during these high-risk times when impaired drivers are most likely to be on our roads.”
According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, violators will face jail time, loss of their driver licenses, or being sentenced to use ignition interlocks. Their insurance rates will go up. Other financial losses include attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential loss of job or job prospects.
There will be several saturation patrols in Morgan Hill from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.:
Saturday, Aug. 20; Sunday, Aug. 21; Friday, Aug. 26; Saturday, Aug. 27; Sunday, Aug. 28; Friday, Sept. 2; Saturday, Sept. 3; and Sunday, Sept. 4.
