Should the United States take a strong leadership role in
determining the future of Libya?
”
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
Question of the week: “Should the United States take a strong leadership role in determining the future of Libya?” Yes: 0 No: 9
- Karen Anderson: “No. This time the United States should offer help, respect the citizens and not impose our ideology. It is more Europe’s purview than ours. “
-
Dave Appling: “No. The United States should play a strong supporting role, but leadership and ‘determining their future’ must belong to the Libyans, not to us and not to NATO. Remember our post-invasion viceroyship in Iraq and what a howling ‘success’ that was? ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’ (Santayana).”
-
Bert Berson: “No. NATO has done the heavy lifting and they need to finish the job. Since the job will take years, the U.S. will have many opportunities to provide support.”
-
Bob Chidester: “No. We have more than enough serious problems at home to work on. We don’t need to be spending our blood and treasure on other countries like Libya. The barbarians in the Middle East will have to solve their own problems. Rumor has it they have already begun to implement Shari’ah Law in Libya. Welcome back to the 12th century.”
-
Dennis Kennedy: “No! It’s time for NATO to step up. If we continue to take the lead and pay the cost, Europe and the rest of the world will let us.”
-
Julian Mancias: “No. The rebels are doing just fine without the full engagement from the United States. The U.S. needs to stay away from other countries domestic politics.”
-
Henry Miller: “No. The future direction of Libya is the responsibility of Libyans. We should support them as long as freedom and democracy are their goals. But ‘determining’ their future, no.”
-
Lisa Pampuch: “No. The future of Libya should be determined by its people. If Libyans want U.S. help, we should of course assist to the degree that we can. However, given our current military commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the urgency with which many on the right say that federal spending must be cut, I don’t see how our assistance can possibly take the form of U.S. soldiers on the ground.”
-
Jeff Smith: “No, we should not. We should let them determine their own destiny. We cannot continue to police and finance the whole world.”
