More than 40 Recology South Valley employees gathered at the bottom of East Dunne Avenue Saturday for a walk up the hill, however it was not simply a weekend stroll. Starting at the bottom near Gallop Drive and working their way up to the top near Thomas Grade, the employees raked, shoveled, and swept the side of the road cleaning dirt, weeds, and trash from the bike line area.

This project was initiated by the employees of Recology South Valley.

“A group of employees came to me several months ago and asked if there was a local project that we might be able to provide to our service area,” said Phil Couchee, general manager at Recology South Valley. Couchee said South Valley employees had read about other Recology subsidiaries doing similar projects and wanted to organize one themselves.

Recology worked with the city and came up with this idea.

“It was good timing”, said Couchee. “The city had approached us about possibility of sweeping this street, however it needed some work to get it to a point where our sweeper could have any effect.” “We appreciate Recology’s volunteer energy and commitment to our community,” City Program Manager Anthony Eulo added. “We know that the residents passing East Dunne everyday will enjoy the cleaner street.”

The crew stated at 8 a.m. and worked until 10:30 a.m., cleaning both sides of the road. After the clean up, they all met at the Community Center for an early barbecue lunch.
