While the City of Morgan Hill and Live Oak High School are celebrating their 100-year anniversaries, students at Sobrato High completed their first 100 days at school on Feb. As the first ASB president of Sobrato, I would like to inform our community of the achievements and highlights of our school for the past 100 days.

What have we done so far?

n The Orientation Day on Aug. 23 had a great turn out – 640 of 700 students.

n ASB activities kicked off with a one time T-shirt sale that proclaimed Sobrato Bulldogs – Born on 8/24/04.

n The Sobrato family members, MHSD officials, City Council members and other local dignitaries attended Sobrato’s grand opening ceremony on Sept.14.

n On Sept. 24: Sobrato High School participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Safeway at Tennant Station. Safeway also donated $2,000 to our ASB account and has been a continuous supporter of Sobrato thereafter.

n Spirit Week- Oct. 4-8.

n Club Day- Sept. 21.

n Food Fair- Dec.15.

n Homecoming Dance and Celebrations: We chose “Come Home the Safeway” as the theme, in honor of our troops stationed abroad and the sponsors (Safeway). Thanks are also due to our friends at Live Oak High School, for making our dances very successful by their participation and for letting us use their facilities.

At least 10 clubs were launched in the first few weeks of the school. Some of them are the Leadership, the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), the FFA (Future Farmers of America), the CSF (California Scholarship Federation), and the Interact Club (Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Morgan Hill). Some other interesting clubs that became popular among the students are the Fantasy Cinema Club and the Roller Hockey Club.

Superior technology and computers are our assets that are helping us with our daily activities. With no gym available, for our first student government body elections, we watched the contestants’ speeches in our own classrooms on a ‘Simultaneous Live Broadcast.’ Our morning announcements are also televised regularly.

What are we planning ahead?

For the remaining year, we are planning a grand Mardi Gras dance on April 15. We also are planning a ‘Bay Cruise’ for the end of the year dance on June 4. I would also like to mention our biggest fundraiser that we just started: a brick sale and the bricks are to be installed permanently around the perimeter of our gymnasium. (Interested sponsors and local business organizations for the brick sale are requested to contact Sobrato High School’s ASB office: 408-201-6200 ext. 1225).

And parts of the campus are close to completion.

Sobrato’s swimming pool, library, amphitheater and the remaining two classroom buildings should be ready by the end of this month. The gymnasium will be available by March. Our performing art center and the theater should be done by May.

For the next academic year, Sobrato High will be very close to being a complete high school, with only seniors missing. That will be a giant leap, considering from where we started. With so many exciting things in store, we, ‘the new kids on the block,’ are going to enjoy our school and will promise to make the ‘newness’ of Sobrato last for some more time. We thank our local community for its support and are counting on your cooperation in the future as well.

Abhilasha S. Devaraj is student body president at Sobrato High. Her column will appear on an occasional basis.
