Live Oak High is officially halfway through another school year. First semester, along with all of its homework, projects, and mid-term finals has ended. For most students, it means that there is only half a school year left until summer.

However, for seniors it means that graduation is less than 18 weeks away. Yes, I am counting. Why shouldn’t I? Graduation should be a huge event in everyone’s life at one point or another. However, although I couldn’t be any more excited to experience the freedom after high school, I know I can’t take the remaining part of the school year for granted.

For example, last week was Live Oak’s Basketball Homecoming. Homecoming weeks for me have always been the most fun, hectic and spirited throughout the school year. This spirit week included dress up days, lunchtime activities, a rally, and of course the big game against Gilroy on Friday night. Good job to the boys varsity team for pulling out a great win.

The dress-up days for the week were pajama, sports, band T-shirt/celebrity, snow, and class/school spirit day. Another event during the week was the nominations and voting for this year’s Winter Homecoming royal court. Congratulations to Ruby Sandoval and Marius Layus for becoming Queen and King.

Some more events to keep students occupied during the spring semester at Live Oak include the upcoming Lip Scene Contest, the “In Da Club ‘Remix’” dance, and of course, Valentine’s Day. For Valentine’s Day, ASB sponsors the selling of roses and “Crush” cans. A student can secretly send a can of Crush soda to a student of their choosing, to let them know how he or she might be feeling.

Also in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, for the second year in a row, ASB is putting on the Matchmaker game. A couple of weeks ago, the entire student body filled out questionnaires about themselves. This week, the results are in, and anyone interested can pay a dollar or two to find out who their “perfect matches” are, based on the information they provided.

It is definitely experiences like these that I am sadly doing for the last time. However, from having a first period exempt, to receiving college acceptance letters, it is easy to enjoy the perks of being a senior.

For me and the rest of my class, this time of year is filled with checking the mail every day when we get home, in anticipation of those big envelopes from the colleges of our choice. Luckily, there are a few more months complete with everything from senior beach day to prom to keep seniors’ minds off of waiting. You can count on Live Oak to always have something fun going on.
