Morgan Hill – In an effort to get his young wrestlers mat time, Live Oak wrestling coach Robert Fernandez has them participating in as many tournaments as possible before the Tri County Athletic League action starts next week.

On Wednesday six Acorn wrestlers placed at the TCAL Novice Tournament in Hollister. Tony Morales (98-pounds) and Vincent Hatakeyama (145-pounds) finished first in their respective divisions.

“Both wrestlers are coming into their own as far as their technique,” said Fernandez. “Vincent has a judo background and Tony is a real quick scrambler. I’d say that they’re above par on what we expect at this point in the season.”

Garrett Webb (160-pounds) earned second place in his weight class, while teammates Justin Evans (205-pounds), Tom Method (274-pounds) and Nic Muhn (135-pounds) captured third place finishes in their divisions.

“All in all we were pretty happy with the performance,” said Fernandez. “Right now I’m just looking to get the wrestlers mat time.”

This weekend the Acorns will be spread out across the Bay Area, competing in three separate tournaments. The varsity heavy hitters, along with two coaches will participate in the Lincoln Duals, while younger wrestlers will participate at the Overfelt Tournament and Mariah Fernandez will be wrestling in the San Leandro Tournament. All three meets take place today.

“I have no idea what to expect this weekend,” said Fernandez. “This will be the first chance for our varsity wrestlers to showcase what they can do. They will get the opportunity to taste the fruits of their labor with all the hard work they have put in during practice.”
