Marine Corps LCpl. Ethan Salzano landed safely on Hawaii soil Thursday night around 10pm. We are so very grateful for all of your thoughts, prayers, letters, emails, care packages, etc., that you sent to him and to us over these months since March.

He would be delighted to hear from you probably on Sunday after he has slept mucho hours, eaten American food and imbibed a bit, showered many times, listened to anything he wants to, goes to the movies, drives in his truck … etc., etc. … kisses American soil and gives thanks to God.

Thank again to all of you for the loving support all these months. Your presence made a difference in our lives. May God bless each of you abundantly.

Editor’s note: Friday morning we received the note above from Mary Ellen Salzano. She had written her monthly column, which appears below, earlier in the week.

My dear readers, I recently received this in e-mail format, and I have to admit it captures a lot of the feelings and emotions any parent feels when your son or daughter is deployed.

This last weekend I attended my second military funeral. Concord laid to rest its first casualty of the war on terrorism: Cpl. Mick Bekowsky. His mother is a member of an online support group I visit. A young Marine who gave his life to protect your freedoms, so please register to vote, and please vote in honor of his and others sacrifices. Our freedoms come at a heavy price.

As I type these words, we are to the point of counting days until our son returns to homeland soil, and for all of you who have walked and prayed along side of our family, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. As much as my heart sings with joy, there is a pain and ache in my soul that will always be there.

The president’s own U.S. Marine Corps Band will be playing in Cupertino and San Francisco the first weekend of November. Visit www.marineband.usmc.mil for program information. The concerts are free.

In closing, a poem by Poet and Peacemaker, Mattie J. T. Stepanek who recently returned to his heavenly home.

“About Wishing”

Some people think that wishing is childish.

But, wishing is for everybody. Wishing can help the old feel young, and wishing can help the young grow into the wisdom of age.

Wishing is not prayer or magic. But somewhere in between.

Like prayer and magic, Wishing brings optimism, and wishing brings hope.

And like prayer and magic, wishing brings new ideas, and sometimes the touch of new life. And that, is essential for our future.

I wish you light, love, laughter, grace, mercy, and forgiveness of self and others. May you receive the wishes that will being you to a life filled with peace, contentment, prosperity and happiness.
