A fine defensive effort in support of junior ace Juliette Bowers
helped lead the Live Oak High softball team to a 1-0 victory over
visiting Salinas on Tuesday. Shortstop Catalina Rawers and third
baseman Katie Hillman both made stellar plays to help hold off the
Cowboys in the decisive seventh and final inning. With the Acorns
leading 1-0 going into the top of the seventh, Salinas got its
leadoff batter on first. But Rawers made a nice play in the hole
between shortstop and third for the first out and, after a
strikeout, Hillman got the final out on another outstanding play on
a slow, high chop at third.

Live Oak took its 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Bowers singled, Alyssa Adamo reached base on a fielder’s choice on which both runners were safe, and Kaitlyn Rauschnot walked to load the bases.
Then, Raelyn Ferry spun a grounder off the shortstop’s glove that scored Bowers from third.
Bowers got the win with a complete-game five-hitter. She struck out 12 and walked two.
Unfortunately, good pitching and fine defense couldn’t help the Acorns against first-place Notre Dame on Thursday, as Live Oak dropped a 1-0 decision to the host Spirits.
Notre Dame’s Kim Reeder tossed a no-hitter against the Acorns.
Bowers again went the distance, scattering seven hits and striking out six, while walking none.
Live Oak (5-4 in league, 10-8 overall) hosts Gilroy on Monday and play at Hollister on Wednesday next week.
