An exciting 4-3 victory over host Gilroy on Tuesday gave the Live Oak High boys tennis team a boost despite a disa-ppointing 4-3 loss to visiting Hollister-San Benito on Thursday.

In the win at Gilroy, the Acorn boys were led by the brother tandem of No. 2 singles player Nick Matsumoto and No. 3 singles player Eric Matsumoto, who both won key matches against the Mustangs.

Live Oak No. 5 singles player Casey McElroy also won his match as the Acorns won three of four singles matches.

In doubles, Live Oak’s No. 1 team of Ryan Alexander and Erick Macias salvaged the only doubles victory for the Acorns by beating Gilroy’s Ben Wilson and Chris Adams 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

But Live Oak (6-4 in league play) couldn’t sustain the effort against the visiting Haybalers yesterday and lost.

LO rugby

Competing as a junior varsity squad in the highly competitive PelicanRef-DotCom tournament in Sacramento, the Live Oak rugby club team (5-4-1 overall) won two matches and tied a third last weekend.

The Acorns downed De La Salle 15-0 in their opener behind tries by Brian Crane, Miguel Ayala and George Quezada.

Then, Live Oak defeated Vacaville by the same 15-0 as Dustin Muhn scored twice and Crane added a try.

In the finale, Live Oak tied Rio Americana 5-5 as Muhn turned in a 75-yard try for the lone Acorn score.

LO boys volleyball

Escaping with a narrow, five-game victory at Seaside, the Live Oak boys volleyball team won a pair of league matches this week to remain undefeated in league play.

On Tuesday, Live Oak (5-0 in league) edged a surprising Seaside team, 25-17, 17-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12, then came back the next night to rout host Salinas in three straight games, 25-11, 25-16, 25-14.

LO track and field

Up against host Palma and Notre Dame on Thursday, Live Oak’s track and field teams dropped both team competitions but had a few solid individual performances.

For the boys, Billy Wong, Jesus Atanacio and Jonathan Kamei finished 1-2-3 in the 1,600, and Wong won the 3,200, while Brandon Powell won the 110 hurdles.

For the girls, Cobbie Jones won the 400, Heather Molyneaux won the 100, Azucena Atanacio won the discus, and Daniella King took first in the triple jump.

In addition, the Acorn girls’ 4X400 relay team of Regina Bawdon, Lisa Herrera, Jessica Votaw and Marissa Weseloh took first.
