Silicon Valley Open Studios will kick off its 2004 spring art extravaganza with a Gala Opening Reception, Thursday, April 22, at the San Jose Museum of Art.

The gala will feature a professional live auction of Collection 2004: an exhibit of artworks selected by a group of jurors as the most impressive entries in the SVOS Stars juried program. Other SVOS Stars juried artists will also exhibit work in a silent auction.

The evening includes a VIP Champagne Reception from 6-7 p.m. with musical entertainment and hors d’ouvres, a silent auction from 6- 7:15 p.m., live auction from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. and super silent auction from 6 – 8:40 p.m.

Of the 460 registered artists, 163 artists participated in this optional juried program to have their artwork reviewed by the following esteemed jurors: Daniel Keegan, executive director, San Jose Museum of Art; Michele Rowe-Shields, visual arts director, Montalvo; Susan Hillhouse, chief curator, Triton Museum of Art; Janet Rindfleisch, executive director, Euphrat Museum; Diana Argabrite, director of arts and schools, Euphrat Museum and Grace Gibson, painter, instructor and art coach.

Of the entrants, 93 artists were selected to be SVOS STARS and were awarded the privilege of submitting an artwork for the Silent Auction portion. Each juror then picked his or her Top Five artists and selected an artwork from the artist’s entry to be placed in Collection 2004.

David Reynolds will be conducting the Live Auction of these Collection 2004 artworks during the reception. Reynolds has been noted for his ability to charm, cajole and entertain many audiences with spontaneous one-liners. He has successfully transformed the role of fundraising auctioneer into a new kind of performance art.

Recognized by the wine industry as a wine expert, he presides over auctions in all of California’s wine-producing regions. Yet, he’s equally comfortable offering fine art, travel, dining and sports items. He recently served as the auctioneer for the SharkByte Art Charity Auction.

San Jose Vice Mayor Patricia Dando will be attending this year’s Gala Reception.

“The arts play a vital role in the diverse culture of Silicon Valley,” said Dando. “I am proud to support this organization which promotes artists of all levels, especially our local, emerging artists who are just beginning to showcase their art.”

The 18th annual self-guided tour of local artist studios on the peninsula will be held the first three weekends (1-2, 8-9, 15-16) in May. Artist Directories are available for purchase online and at local retailers. Free Map Guides are available at libraries throughout the Bay Area.

“We are looking forward to honoring an extremely talented group of artists in our program this year, and appreciate the San Jose Museum of Art enabling us to hold our Gala Opening Reception at the Museum,” said Kerri Lawnsby, executive director of Silicon Valley Open Studios.

“We are thrilled that David Reynolds will be conducting the Live Auction of our artworks and anticipate a highly entertaining evening.”

The Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center is making space available to visual artists to participate in the Silicon Valley Open Studios on Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. 17000 Monterey Road.

Artists are also required to register with Silicon Valley Open Studios at www.svopenstudios.org.
