Contrary to School Board President George Panos’ orchestrated, unprofessional diatribe at Tuesday night’s continued School Board meeting, once again, he was knowingly incorrect.
The CARE-initiated recall of the four School Board Trustees, did not fail; CARE deliberately withdrew it because the recall objectives were achieved: Carolyn McKennan’s contract was not renewed, Board member Tom Kinoshita resigned, and the remaining three recall targets publicly pledged not to seek re-election in November.
CARE demonstrated the fiscal responsibility we would like to see from our school board by voluntarily foregoing the recall effort in the interest of saving over $300,000 for our schools (the cost of a special election that would have been required). In light of their agreement not to seek re-election, CARE decided that spending over $300,000 to remove the remaining three trustees from office a few months before the end of their normal term did not justify the cost which would be imposed upon the school district.
Although the recall objectives were met, many of the issues, which brought CARE to life, still exist. CARE will continue to aggressively pursue our mission until positive changes occur in the Morgan Hill School District. We, as a community, cannot be satisfied with the status quo. We are on the verge of financial disaster and we must continue to force the superintendent and the Board to be realistic about the future and to act accordingly.
