Do you have a job interview with a particular company and wish
you knew more about it? Or perhaps you need information to make a
decision about whether or not to buy stock in a company?
Do you have a job interview with a particular company and wish you knew more about it? Or perhaps you need information to make a decision about whether or not to buy stock in a company?
With a Morgan Hill library card, you can access a subscription database purchased by the library called “The Business & Company Resource Center.”
The Business & Company Resource Center database is extensive, with coverage of over 300,000 companies. It offers many searching options, and you only need the name of a company to get started. Once entered, you have many choices:
• News articles about the company
• Investment reports
• Company histories
• Industry and company rankings
• Brands and product information
• Contact information
Here are two example searches for Business & Company Resource Center:
Q: I have an interview with Specialized Bicycles. How can I find out what their annual sales are?
A: From the database’s home page, type “Specialized” into the search box. The second result you get is “Specialized Bicycle Components, Inc.,” its official name. Click on the name. The next page is the company profile page. About halfway down the page, you will see the annual sales figure.
Q: I’d like to read some articles about Ebay.
A: From the database’s home page, type “ebay” into the search box. The first option on the list you’ll get is “Ebay Inc.” Click that. The next page has some tabs along the top. One of them is “News/Magazines.” Click there. You will then get a chronological (backwards) list of articles written about E-bay.
Visit the Morgan Hill Library and ask one of the reference librarians to get you started with Business & Company Resource Center, available on the “catalog” computers.
From home, go to our home page, at www.santaclaracountylib.org, and click on “Databases and Research Tools.” The next page lists all the databases we subscribe to; “Business & Company Resource Center” is 2nd on the list. When you click on it, you will be asked to enter your library card number and 4-digit PIN.
This week’s column was written by Shawn Wistrom, an extra-help reference librarian intern with Santa Clara County Library.
