The South Valley Symphony will present an unusual musical treat
by hosting the Mariachi Santa Cecilia ensemble at the Gavilan
College Theater Saturday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m.
The South Valley Symphony will present an unusual musical treat by hosting the Mariachi Santa Cecilia ensemble at the Gavilan College Theater Saturday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. The Orchestra will team up with the Mariachi Band in four selections. They will include the very popular” Guadalajara” composed by Pepe Guizar, “La Negro” written jointly by S. Varga and R. Fuentes, “Café Colon” by Miguel Martinez and “Amor Eterno” by Juan Gabriel.
Following a brief intermission, the Mariachi group will perform several selections during the second half of the program. Barbara Perez-Diaz and Suzanna Lambert founded this group in 1995. Perez-Diaz has 31 years of experience playing in Mariachi groups and Suzanne has been playing for 15 years. The Mariachi Santa Cecelia group has performed extensively throughout Central California.
The South Valley Symphony will open the program with The Little Train of the Caipira by Hector Villa-Lobos, followed by the popular guitar Concerto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo. Rick Vandivier will solo. Vandivier is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston and San Jose State University. He now teaches guitar at San Jose State. Vandivier has found inspiration in influences that stretch from Andres Segovia to Pat Metheny to Jimi Hendrix.
His career has been highlighted by performances in The Hague, The Netherlands; Berlin; Abidjan on the Ivory Coast of Africa; the Chicago Opera House and Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Tickets are on sale in Morgan Hill at Rosso’s Furniture and the Music Tree; in Gilroy at Rosso’s Furniture, California Music, Porcellas’s Music and Snappy Photo; in San Juan Bautista at Mission Gallery and in Hollister at Dorothy McNett’s Place. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens age 55 and up and $7 for students ages 12 to 18. Tickets will be available at the Gavilan Theater Box Office 45 minutes before concert time.
