I recently received a flyer from De******@*ol.com. This group is proposing a petition against the auto mall-road extensions for an additional auto dealership on Dunne Avenue. This would require the city council to rezone from residential to commercial. I am all for the petition but for different reasons.
• Do we want a community that revolves around a strip mall such as Gilroy? Compare the ambiance of downtown Morgan Hill to downtown Gilroy. Does the huge shopping mall on the edge of Gilroy have anything to do with this difference?
• How many new cars do the 30,000 residents of Morgan Hill buy a year? Not enough to keep a big dealership going. So we will attract more traffic and more toxic smog to Morgan Hill.
• This is all in the service of “keeping our city services financed.” Because our federal and state governments have consistently taken money from city coffers in this time of reduced infrastructure spending and given less back to us, the city of Morgan Hill is in a bind as are all cites in this state.
Enron owes the state $9 billion it made through fradulant practices. Our federal govenment has spent $400 billion of our taxpayers’ hard earned money to finance a war for oil in Iraq that does not discriminate Iraqi dead from American dead or innocent men women and children from military aggressors.
Make the connection folks. An auto or strip mall is not going to solve our local financial problems. Getting registered to vote and voting for the people who will commit themselves to a citizens’ agenda of clean air, clean water, liveable comminuties and decent health care and education from kingergarten through college for all.
