I want to publically thank the mayor and council members for their wonderful example of community spirit engendered by the decision to put the new library at the Civic Center.

I marvel at how well the system worked to produce the result that was best for the community. I do not think the council should have done anything different and I don’t think the council should do anything different in the future. he reaction of the people to the mistake and the ability to correct it is part of the democratic process that is such a wonderful feature of this country.

How often does a popular groundswell like this occur? That it can and that it can be effective is part of our system. Don’t change how you make decisions based on this one incident. They do not need to find a better way to engage the public in the decision-making process, it’s already there.

I fear that the council will spend a lot of time and energy agonizing over how to change the decision-making process when that energy would be better spent carrying-on the business of the city. Residents will let council members know if they’re making the wrong decision.

Don’t look on this incident as a harmful flaw that needs to be corrected. Instead rejoice in the community spirit that manifested itself as democracy in action.
