The Morgan Hill Bronco A all-stars did it the hard way, winning the Sectional Tournament by coming from the losers bracket to beat Blossom Valley No. 1 twice in back-to-back night games at Britton this week.
The Bronco A all-star squad downed Blossom Valley No. 1 7-0 on Tuesday and 6-1 on Wednesday.
With the Sectional Tournament title in hand, the Bronco A all-stars advance to the Regional Tournament in Santa Clara. The local team’s first game is on Saturday.
In the Sectional Tournament, the Bronco A squad was forced to win three straight games after losing to Blossom Valley No. 1 7-2 in the winner’s bracket finals last on Sunday.
The Bronco A team responded by outlasting Los Altos No. 1 9-8, rallying for four runs to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and winning the game with a run in the eighth (first extra) inning, on Monday to set up the rematch with Blossom Valley No. 1.
The first game against BV No. 1 saw MH’s Nick Ramirez throw a complete-game shutout, striking out four batters.
Chris Bradley, Ryan Williams and Matt Carroll had RBI basehits, and Robby Coy went 2-for-4.
In the second game, BV No. 1 went with its ace and MH countered with its big horse Matt Carroll, who went six innings, giving up just four hits and no runs.
MH got its first run in the second inning when Mike Singleton doubled and Hamik singled him home.
In the third, Ramirez singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Singleton.
Hagiperos and Brian Bradley scored in the fourth on Chris Bradley’s shot to the fence and MH had a 4-0 lead.
The local all-stars added two insurance runs in the sixth.
Meanwhile, the MH Mustang A all-stars dropped a tough 13-3 decision to Blossom Valley No. 1 in Sectional Tournament action at Britton on Wednesday.
The loss in the winner’s bracket finals sent the local Mustang all-stars into the loser’s bracket, where they will play against the winner of Thursday night’s Santa Clara-Fremont No. 1 contest in an elimination game at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Britton.
A win will guarantee MH a berth in the Regional Tournament. But to win the sectional title, the Mustang A all-stars will have to repeat the feat pulled off by the Bronco A all-stars, winning three straight games including two against Blossom Valley No. 1.
If the Mustang A all-stars win Friday night, they will play Blossom Valley No. 1 on Saturday at noon.
If the local all-star squad wins that game, it would set up a winner-take-all game for the sectional title 30 minutes after the first game ends.
In other all-star action, the MH Pony A and B all-stars begin Sectional Tournament play this weekend at Fisher Middle School in Los Gatos.
