After 11 years of gratifying service in elected office both as a trustee of the Morgan Hill School Board and as a member of the Morgan Hill City Council, I have decided not to run for re-election in 2004.
The achievements that have enriched my tenure as a City Council member are noteworthy – none of which would have been possible without the joint efforts of colleagues and the support of concerned citizens of Morgan Hill.
Together we extended the life of the Redevelopment Agency (RDA), which is essential to renovating and modernizing the city’s infrastructure.
Through the RDA, we brought to reality a thriving Community Center and Swimming Complex. Other signature projects have moved closer to reality. The Indoor Recreation Center planning effort has progressed nicely. The new library location has been established and programs for children’s recreation activities are under development.
We fought valiantly to save Saint Louise Hospital, but never gave up on securing medical services for our city’s residents. After long and laborious efforts by community members, medical services are finally coming back to Morgan Hill.
Morgan Hill will continue to be served best by officials who are diverse and speak for all of its citizens. Modernization must be accomplished without compromising the rural atmosphere of Morgan Hill. I will continue to remain involved in serving the community to meet those goals.
Though I am open to exploring new venues of public service, now is the time to tend to my real estate business and to be with my family. My husband will be taking a sabbatical to lead international research projects in several Asian universities next year, and we plan to travel throughout the Pacific Rim.
To serve as an elected official was a life-long aspiration. I am forever deeply indebted to the citizens of Morgan Hill who graced me with the honor of serving them.
Councilwoman Hedy Chang,
