MH Makos take sixth at CVAL swim finals, Cabrillo Threshers win
again
The perennial powerhouse Cabrillo Threshers defended their league title once again at the Coast Valley Athletic League swim championships at the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center last weekend.
About 800 swimmers from nine league teams competed in last weekend’s finals at the new facility, which drew rave reviews from coaches, swimmers and fans.
Led by veteran swimmers David Dunn and Susie Suchomel, who were swimming in their last league finals for the local swim club, the Morgan Hill Makos finished sixth overall in the league finals.
On his way to swim at the University of the Pacific, Dunn racked up major team points. Dunn recorded four first-place finishes, all Pacific Reportable Times, including a 21.41 in the 50 freestyle and a 1:56.24 in the 200 individual medley.
And, Suchomel, who is heading to swim for UC-Santa Cruz, recorded four third-place finishes, and a second in the 200 individual medley (2:18.00). Suchomel achieved qualifying times in all five event finals.
Of the 110 Morgan Hill Makos swimmers participating in the meet, several earned medals with top eight finishes in their respective events.
Girls 6-and-under — Kathryn Lernihan took first place in the 25 freestyle (22.13).
Boys 8-and-under — Daniel Pawlak finished in third place in the 25 backstroke (23.44), with teammate Josh Parker finishing sixth (24.06).
Girls 10-and-under — Kortney Kay won two events, including the 100 freestyle with a qualifying time of 1:07.03.
Boys 10-and-under — Saul Orona placed eighth in the 50 freestyle (34.47).
Girls 11-12 — Estelle Richardson took third in the 50 backstroke (33.60) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (1:01.82). Teammate Katie Rick placed third in both the 200 freestyle (2:10.84) and the 50 breaststroke (36.27).
Richardson and Rick also teamed up with Sarah Sendejas and Amber Acevedo to take second place in both the medley and freestyle relays.
Boys 11-12 — Danny Thompson placed third in both the 50 backstroke (32.94) and 50 breaststroke (36.53).
Girls 13-14 — Alisa Pinarbasi placed fourth in both the 100 butterfly (1:05.17) and the 50 freestyle (26.63).
Annemeike Kerstens took sixth in the 50 free (27.18) and placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.69).
Jessica Poon placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.91) and eighth in the 100 freestyle (59.76).
And, the ladies joined Ally Finley to place third in both the freestyle and medley relays.
Boys 13-14 — Mike Wu won the 500 freestyle with a Pacific Reportable Time of 5:02.68, with teammate Steven Rick taking fourth with a qualifying time of 5:11.31.
Wu also place second in the 100 butterfly (58.75), while Rick placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.28).
Matt Sheppard placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.21).
And, the trio was joined by teammate Eric McCombs to place second in both the freestyle and medley relays.
Girls 15-18 — In the 500 freestyle, Laura Melroy, Laura Shope and Missy Miller placed 3-4-5 in finals. Shope and Melroy also finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 50 freestyle, while Miller racked up points by placing third in both the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley.
They were joined by Suchomel to place third in both the freestyle and medley relays.
