Math and science can be fun. Gavilan College Science Alive! offers a day of hands-on learning for middle school students in grades 5-8 (and their parents).
Students are invited to participate in the fun, hands-on activities at Gavilan College Science Alive! Science Alive!, now in its third year, is a full day of hands-on workshops that make learning science and math fun.
Participants get to choose among 16 different workshops including “Robots and You” (new this year), presented by Mark Leon of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in which participants will get hands-on experience operating a robot; “What’s in the Box”, presented by Gavilan College intructors Vic Robinson and Janet Conrey, in which students will take a computer apart and put it back together; “A Cow’s Eye View”, presented by Dennis Harrigan of Gilroy Veterinary Hospital, which will teach students the anatomy of the eye by having them dissect a cow’s eyeball; and many others.
A number of organizations are partners in this year’s Science Alive!, and will be presenting workshops: NASA will present a workshop on robotics (see above), Community Media Access Partnership (CMAP) will present “Make a TV Show”, Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center (WERC) will present “Feathers, fur, and Scales – A Live Animal Program”, the AIM Center (American Institute of Mathematics) will present “How Unusual”, the Gilroy Fire Department will presnet “First Aid for Kids” and the Tech Museum of Innovation will present “Pet Rescue.”
Optional workshops for parents will be offered in both English and Spanish on the topics: “Financial Aid: Money for College”, and “Preparing for High School and College – What Parents Should Know”.
The day will start on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Gavilan College main campus at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy, with a check-in in the student center, and a welcome/keynote address by Mark Leon of NASA. Participants will then split up and attend two morning workshop sessions. Everyone will gather together for lunch, raffle and prizes, followed by one afternoon workshop session.
This programs helps to build interest in science and math in the middle school years; helps kids think about college and give them exposure to a college campus; and gives parents important information about preparing their children for college.
There is a registration fee of only $10 per person, which includes lunch. A limited number of scholarships will be available based upon need.
Buses will be available to transport students at no charge from Morgan Hill and Hollister, made possible by Tiffany Transportation Services in Hollister, and a grant from the Morgan Hill Community Foundation.
Brochures with complete description of all workshops have been distributed to middle schools in the Gavilan College district, as well as to sixth grade classes in Morgan Hill.
