Competing in the Terra Nova High wrestling tournament in Pacifica on Dec. 19-20, the Live Oak High varsity and junior varsity wrestlers competed in a tough event that will allow them to do better in the future.
On Dec. 20, the Acorn varsity absorbed some heart-breaking early-round losses but managed a seventh-place tie in the 33-team event, despite forfeiting six weight classes.
Live Oak’s Hondo Dominguez earned a fourth-place medal at 112 pounds, Gabe Sedberry won a fifth-place medal at 189 and Mike Gamez nabbed a fourth-place medal in the Heavyweight division.
In the JV tourney the night before, Live Oak won three second-place finishes.
Jonathan Redmond, who has medaled in every tourney he has entered this season so far, took runner-up honors at 171 pounds, Steve Gunn took second at 140 and Copatzy Valencia was on her way to a title in the 189-pound division when she injured her wrist and forearm, and had to be taken to the hospital. The injury was not as serious as originally thought but Valencia had to settle for second place.
Beatrice Castro also earned a medal for her third-place finish in the 119-pound division.
The JV team took eighth in the 28-team event.
