Playing with a short bench didn’t hurt the Live Oak High girls basketball team’s defense against visiting North Salinas on Thursday night.
Unfortunately, it didn’t help the Acorns’ offense either en route to a 37-28 loss to the Vikings.
Live Oak (0-2 in league, 2-13 overall) played with just eight healthy players because freshman Megan Gulla is injured, junior Valerie Simpson moved away and junior Christina Rodriguez was reassigned to the junior varsity.
North Salinas (1-1 in league, 9-7 overall) scored just enough to outpace the Acorns, who only managed 11 points in the first half.
“We did okay (defensively) but we just have an offense,” Acorn coach Richard Silva said. “There’s just nobody to lead the offense and we don’t take open shots. We just freeze up in games.”
The Acorns trailed 11-6 after the first quarter and 23-11 at the half.
Live Oak was outscored by just two points in the third quarter and trailed by a 32-19 score before outscoring the Vikings 10-6 in the final quarter to provide the final margin.
Viking Alexis Villarin was the main thorn in Live Oak’s side, scoring a game-high 20 of her team’s 37 total points in the contest.
Live Oak senior guard Ruth Dominguez scored a team-high seven points, while senior forward Dana Cline added six.
Live Oak is scheduled to play its next game at Salinas on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
