Significant sink holes have developed in the newly constructed pathway along Butterfield Boulevard.

Public Works Director Jim Ashcraft said the holes were caused by the contractor who constructed the trunk sewer line that runs underneath the path.

“We’ve been in communication with the contractor,” Ashcraft said, “and he knows we are holding him responsible.”

If the repairs are begun within a week or two, he said, all will be well.

“If not,” he said, “we will go after his bonding company.”

The holes appeared in the path – not in the roadway – from a few 100 feet south of East Dunne Avenue to a few hundred feet north of Diana Avenue.

“The path probably failed in about a dozen places,” Ashcraft said.

The potholes have nothing to do with large earthmovers seen shifting large quantities of dirt in the same area. Public Works found, during the heavy rains surrounding the year’s end, that the earthen check dams built in the drainage ditch along Butterfield Blvd. were too high; they are being lowered, Ashcraft said.

The 2003-04 city budget set aside $1,533,793 for street repairs. During 2002-03, (July 1, 2002-June 30, 2003) Public Works spent $1,860,057 on repairs, more than had been budgeted, according to Finance Director Jack Dilles.
