Things started out well for the Live Oak High girls soccer team in its 4-0 victory over visiting North Salinas in league play Monday, but didn’t end the way Acorn coach Tony Vasquez would have liked.

Coming off a tense Tri-County Athletic League opener at Hollister-San Benito, the Acorn girls shrugged off any hint of a letdown by sprinting to a 3-0 lead against the overmatched Vikings midway through the first half. Catriona Adam, Michelle McDonald and Cobbie Jones each scored in the first half for the Acorns.

But Live Oak (3-0 in league, 6-3-3 overall) lost its focus in the second half and could only manage one more goal the rest of the way — a second-half score by Janae Pimental.

To make matters worse, Vasquez was slapped with a red card in the second half for “unsporting behaviour,” according to referee Marcos Martinez.

The red card came as Vasquez protested what he saw as one-sided calls by Martinez.

The red card came without a warning and without a preceding yellow card.

“Usually, there’s a warning,” he said.

As a result, Vasquez will have to sit out Live Oak’s next game, at Salinas on Thursday at 5 p.m.
