A split of its opening-round doubleheader at the Wilcox Tournament on Saturday gave the Live Oak High baseball team its first victory of the young season and guaranteed the Acorns at least two more games this week.
Live Oak (1-2) plays Santa Clara on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Washington Park in Santa Clara, and plays Archbishop Mitty on Friday at 4:30 p.m., also at Washington Park.
On Saturday, the Acorns beat Saratoga 6-5 on Jared Kwock’s tie-breaking sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Kwock knocked in Dave Newton, who had singled, stole second and went to third on a passed ball.
Newton had two hits, scored two runs and had an RBI, while Daniel Salinas added a pair of hits including a solo home run, and two RBIs for the Acorns.
Dylan Regan started and Eric Abbott finished up, picking up the victory in relief.
In the nightcap, Live Oak was shut down by one of the top pitchers in the section, Wilcox lefty Donald Brandt, who tossed a two-hitter to beat the Acorns 5-1.
Andrew Cummins and Kwock had the only hits, both doubles, off Brandt, who has already signed with Santa Clara University.
Newton went five innings and allowed four runs, three earned, with eight strikeouts.
