Runners looking for a good stretch in a good cause need look no further than the 21st Wildflower Run coming up on Sunday, March 28.
The American Association of University Women, Morgan Hill Branch, will sponsor the run, which always starts and finishes at Live Oak High School. The day includes a 10K run, 5K run/walk and a 2K run for kids 12 and under, all with the intent of entertaining the populace and raising money for local scholarships for girls and grants for graduate women.
“The Run raises thousands of dollars for the AAUW Educational Foundation, one of the oldest and largest private sources of funding for graduate study for women,” said Barbara Palmer, Wildflower Run chair. “We also fund a scholarship for a Gavilan College woman who is continuing her education and offer scholarships to local high school girls (both at Live Oak and Central high schools). The Run is a lot of work and takes nearly a year of planning, but it also is lots of fun for both the runners and workers. It is definitely worth the effort.”
Each runner receives a specially designed, always sought after, T-shirt, and winners in various age categories are awarded medals and other prizes. All pre-registered runners are eligible for door prizes that include gift certificates for restaurants and other businesses, bottles of local wine and other useful goodies. The run takes place in a beautiful country setting on flat, paved roads. The course used to follow Cochrane Road by Coyote Creek Park and Anderson Dam but the police department decided runners, boaters and drivers couldn’t share the narrow two-lane road in safety. But there should be wildflowers to see, horses watching in puzzlement and plenty of water to toss over over-heated heads.
Check-in and day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The 2K run for kids starts at 8:30 a.m. The 10 K USATF Certified course begins at 9 a.m, with the 5K run and fun walk at 9:10 a.m.
Fees are $22 if received before March 19, $25 afterwards. The family rate for three or more (in an immediate family) is $50. Registration flyers are available at BookSmart (corner of Monterey Road and West Second Street downtown) or at www.aauw-morganhill.org/ Online registration may be completed at www.active.com For Run details contact Wendy at
