Morgan Hill – The inaugural Sobrato Shootout basketball tournament was a success in many ways for the host Lady Bulldogs over the weekend.
The Tournament raised about $2,500 for the Bulldogs with $1,500 coming from selling advertisement space in the tournament program and another $1,000 earned on the tournament itself.
Sobrato captured second place out of four teams in the tournament with one win and one loss, improving their season record to 2-1.
The Lady Bulldogs kicked off the tournament with a lopsided victory over the Calvary Chapel Warriors, 59-11 on Friday night. Freshman Sarina Santiago led Sobrato with 21 points and two steals in the win and teammate Michelle Bradley added 14 rebounds, nine points and two steals.
Sobrato dominated the Warriors from the opening tip off, executing a smothering full-court press to keep Calvary Chapel on its heels. Roxy Dominguez was huge on defense for the Bulldogs, intercepting passes and shutting down the opposing team’s point guard. Sobrato’s defense held the Warriors scoreless in the second half.
“I’m glad they won. We worked hard on offense all week,” said Sobrato coach Rodney Tabares. “The full-court press really works for us because we have agile, quick players.”
On Saturday, Sobrato faced off against San Lorenzo Valley, who had stomped Anchorpoint Chrisitan on Friday night, 61-6. The Bobcats got the best of the Bulldogs in the tournament’s championship game, beating Sobrato 57-30.
Once again Santiago led the Bulldogs offense with 10 points and one steal. Teammate Laura Billos contributed eight points and six rebounds in the loss and Bradley added six points.
Sobrato’s Santiago and Bradley were the Lady Bulldogs elected to the all-tournament team.
San Lorenzo’s experienced starters were able to hold off the Bulldogs young offense on Saturday to earn first place in the tournament.
“They have good senior players, and I start three freshman and two sophomores,” explained Tabares.
Anchorpoint Christian earned a third place finish in the tournament with a defeat over Calvary Chapel on Saturday.
