For the third year, the Pride of Morgan Hill will host the its Slugfest softball tournament at Community Park this weekend.

The 16-team event will include a pair of eight-team tourneys featuring the 10-year-old and 12-year-old age groups.

Saturday’s action will include pool play, while Sunday’s will include single-elimination championship play, according to Pride organizer Nancy Hillman.

“It’s nice to have a tournament at home,” Hillman said.

Games will start at 8 a.m. both days.

Meanwhile, the MH Pride 12-and-under Green team began its tournament season recently.

Following are the results:

Salinas Rockets 7, PRIDE 3

The Pride started out like a house afire as pitcher Kelly Hillman shut down the Rockets 1-2-3 in the first, and the first two Pride hitters, Stephanie Doting and Alyssa Barsanti, crossed the plate in the bottom of the inning.

However, the runs were negated by a runner missing the plate, and the Pride never quite recovered.

The Pride wasted a two-hit performance by catcher Shayna Osuna.

Monterey Mad Dogs 13, PRIDE 1

The Pride encountered superior forces in the second game, as they were bombed by Monterey.

Morgan Hill’s Doting got the Pride’s only hit and scored the team’s lone run in the game.

PRIDE 5, Cupertino Inferno 2

The Pride bounced back and won their third game on Saturday, with a strong showing against Cupertino.

Amanda Whitling, Cat Molnar, and Jacey Turay joined the hit parade, with Doting and Osuna also chipping in with safeties.

Mountain View Nova 6, PRIDE 2

The Pride dropped out early in the elimination round, as they were bested by Mountain View. The Nova jumped out to a 6-0 lead, scoring five runs in the third inning. Morgan Hill’s Kelly Henningsen finally ended the inning with a nice running catch in left field.

Frankie Kellett did a great job in pitching relief as she shut the Nova down in their last at bat.

The Pride girls showed great resilience as they mounted a strong comeback in the last inning, seriously threatening to erase the 6-0 deficit.

Brittany Vaughn-Vandagriff started things off with a triple that turned into a score as the defense overthrew third base.

Whitling, Turay, and Molnar later got consecutive base hits, and it looked like the Pride was in business.

The fates were not kind however, as Molnar was called for the Pride’s second out for an improper substitution.

Instead of first and third, two runs in and one out, the Pride was set back to runner on second, two outs.

The girls were not able to regain their momentum after that.
