Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez has appointed Assemblymember John Laird, D-Santa Cruz, to the newly created position of alternate conferee to the Legislative Conference Committee on the California State Budget.

Laird’s 27th District includes Morgan Hill and San Martin.

The Conference Committee is charged with negotiating the differences between assembly and senate versions of the budget in order to create a single budget for approval by the full legislature and the governor. The committee is meeting to hammer out an agreement in time for the June 15 constitutional deadline to pass a state budget.

Laird joins as the Assembly alternate to the six-member Conference Committee, which includes Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, Judy Chu, D-Monterey Park, Rick Keene, R-Chico and senators Wesley Chesbro, D-Arcata; DeDe Alpert, D-San Diego; and Ross Johnson, R-Irvine. As alternate, Laird will attend the marathon budget sessions in the capitol and officially step in for Steinberg or Chu as needed.

“I’m honored to be joining this distinguished group of legislators,” said Laird. “Working together and with courage, I’m confident the Conference Committee will help ensure the people of California get a budget that retains the promise of our higher education system, protects those most in need and introduces a higher level of fiscal discipline.”

Laird serves on several budget-related committees including the Assembly Budget Committee, the Assembly Budget Subcommittee #1: Health and Human Services, and the Joint Legislative Budget Committee. He is also chair of the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee and chair of the Assembly Special Committee on State Mandates.
